The Palm Beach County Sports Commission's Board of Directors has approved financial support of over $45,000 to eight sports events scheduled to take place during May - September, 2009 in Palm Beach County. The sporting events are projected to generate an estimated 10,900 hotel room nights and have an estimated economic impact in excess of $5 million.

Graham Gano Wins the Lou Groza Award

Announced live from the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show, Graham Gano is the newest recipient of the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award. Gano beat out Utah's Louie Sakoda and Arkansas State's Josh Arauco for the award.

Lois Kwasman Award Winners Announced

During the recent 17th Annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Awards, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission recognized two outstanding Board members, Jeff Zipper and Michael Brady, who both received the Lois Kwasman MVP Award.

Steve Walsh, former University of Miami All-American and NFL Quarterback, has accepted the head football coaching position at West Palm Beach's Cardinal Newman High School. This is the first coaching position for Steve, but something he has always dreamed of.

Winter Equestrian Festival Opens

The FTI Winter Equestrian Festival supported by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission has opened in Wellington at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. The Festival runs through March 29 and features thousands of riders from around the world. According to Palm Beach County Sports Commission President Don Dufresne, a partner at Greenspoon Marder, the WEF is estimated to have $57 million economin impact to Palm Beach County and brings in approxametly 85,000 room nights.

Sports Commission Releases New Website

At its January 20, 2009 Board of Directors Meeting, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission unveiled its new website. The project, which had been in development for over a year, is the final component of the Sports Commission's rebranding program. Along with the new look of the website; the Sports Commission has also introduced new applications. Commission President Don Dufresne, a partner at the law firm Greenspoon Marder, P.A., said "These features will truly make the Sports Commission website the portal to everything Sports in Palm Beach County."

The Palm Beach County Sports Commission Board of Directors approves a total of $76,000 of funding for seven different sporting events, including Super Bowl XLIV. These events are estimated to bring nearly $50 million in economic impact to Palm Beach County, and generate over 16,000 room nights for Palm Beach County hoteliers. Other events to receive funding include the Geico Offshore Super Series World Championship Invitational, the National Water Ski Championships, the National Firefighter Games, the Birks & Mayors Junior All Star Invitational, Perfect Game’s World Wood Bat Association Championships, and the Palm Beach Punishers’ Women’s Tackle Football Team.

The Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced the finalists for the 2008 Annual Sports Awards, which will be presented at the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet on March 29th at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. The finalists include a sensational pitcher for the Florida Marlins, a Wimbledon champion, an undefeated high school track superstar, a college basketball coaching legend, and a world-class polo player. Selecting three finalists in each category was difficult because Palm Beach County is full of talented athletes and coaches.
